Power, Fear, and the Politics of Control: A Comparative Reflection on the Night of the Long Knives and Modern American Leadership

Power, Fear, and the Politics of Control: Then and Now

By Rev. Paula Josephine Sadler

Introduction

The consolidation of political power has taken many forms throughout history, ranging from overt violence to more subtle mechanisms of control. One of the most infamous examples is the Night of the Long Knives, a turning point in the rise of Adolf Hitler, during which he eliminated perceived rivals and solidified his authority over Germany. While the historical circumstances of Nazi Germany differ profoundly from those of the modern United States, examining patterns of leadership, rhetoric, and treatment of opposition offers a lens through which to reflect on contemporary political dynamics, including the leadership of Donald Trump.

I. Economic Collapse and Power

Before Hitler’s rise, the global economy was shaken by the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the Great Depression.

  • Massive speculation

  • Margin borrowing

  • Artificial inflation of markets

When the crash came:

  • Wealth was wiped out

  • Millions were left desperate

👉 This created the emotional and economic conditions where extreme leadership could rise.

Modern Parallel: Tech & AI Bubble

Today, we are seeing:

  • Rapid expansion of AI and tech markets

  • Massive concentration of wealth

  • Speculative investment cycles

👉 The pattern mirrors earlier bubbles:

  • Early entrants profit

  • Late entrants absorb losses

📊 Side-by-Side: Financial Patterns

II. War, Industry, and Profit

War has long been intertwined with economic systems.

  • Weapons manufacturing

  • Military contracts

  • Private contractors

Modern examples include:

  • Defense corporations

  • Private military firms

  • Global arms networks

As illustrated in War Dogs, individuals and companies can profit enormously from conflict.

👉 War can:

  • Stimulate economies

  • Shift public attention

  • Strengthen centralized power

III. Historical Context: The Night of the Long Knives

In June 1934, Hitler ordered a purge of political opponents and internal rivals, most notably within the SA (Sturmabteilung). Figures such as Ernst Röhm were executed without trial. This event marked a decisive shift from political maneuvering to authoritarian control. By removing opposition through violence, Hitler secured loyalty from the military and eliminated threats to his leadership.

The purge did not occur in isolation. It followed years of economic hardship after the Great Depression, widespread public fear, and the weakening of democratic institutions under the Weimar Republic. Hitler’s rise was fueled by promises of national restoration, the use of propaganda, and the targeting of perceived enemies.

IV. The Reichstag Fire

The Reichstag Fire demonstrates how moments of crisis—whether orchestrated or exploited—can be used to justify sweeping actions against targeted groups. In 1933, the Nazis used the fire to suspend civil liberties and arrest thousands of political opponents, consolidating power rapidly. In the United States today, immigration enforcement has become a deeply contentious issue, with large numbers of individuals detained and deported under the authority of the Department of Homeland Security. Reports and legal challenges have raised concerns about detention conditions, family separation, and due process. While these actions occur within a different legal and institutional framework than Nazi Germany, they raise important questions about how fear, policy, and power intersect—and how governments justify actions taken against vulnerable populations.

V. Legal Power and Consolidation

In 1933, the rapid consolidation of power in Germany unfolded through a series of legal and political steps. Following the Reichstag Fire, President Paul von Hindenburg signed the Reichstag Fire Decree, which suspended key civil liberties, including freedom of expression, press, assembly, and privacy. Within weeks, on March 23, the Enabling Act of 1933 granted Adolf Hitler the authority to pass laws without parliamentary approval. By July 14, Germany had become a one-party state, with all political opposition effectively eliminated.

This sequence illustrates how quickly democratic structures can be weakened when fear, crisis, and legal authority converge. In contemporary political discourse in the United States, there has been increasingly strong and polarizing language directed at political opponents, including characterizations of opposing groups as threats to the nation. Some rhetoric has raised concerns among critics about the erosion of norms around pluralism, dissent, and institutional independence. While the United States continues to operate within a constitutional system with functioning elections, courts, and a multi-party political structure, these developments prompt reflection on the importance of safeguarding democratic principles.

The historical lesson is not that the two situations are the same, but that the language used about opponents, the concentration of authority, and the public’s response to these shifts all matter deeply. Democracies are sustained not only by laws, but by a shared commitment to tolerance, accountability, and the protection of dissent.

VI. Executive Power and Modern Governance

In the United States:

  • Executive orders are legal tools

  • Used by presidents of both parties

However, recent years have seen:

  • Increased reliance on executive action

  • Debate over scope and limits

👉 This raises critical questions:

  • How much power can concentrate in one office?

  • How quickly can it expand?

VII. Messaging and Division

Across both historical and modern contexts:

  • Problems are simplified

  • Groups are blamed

  • Leaders position themselves as the solution

📊 Side-by-Side: Messaging Patterns

Then

Now

State propaganda

Media & digital amplification

Identified enemies

Political & cultural opponents

National restoration

“Fixing the nation” narratives

Fear-based unity

Crisis-driven messaging

VIII. The Larger Historical Pattern

These patterns extend beyond one leader or country.

We see them in:

  • Joseph Stalin

  • Pol Pot

  • Colonial systems

  • The slave trade

👉 The pattern is recurring:

  • Crisis

  • Fear

  • Power

  • Control

IX. Economic Power Behind Political Power

Behind many of these systems:

  • Wealth concentration

  • War profits

  • Resource control

👉 Economics and power are inseparable.

X. Conclusion

The value of comparison lies not in declaring that history is repeating itself exactly, but in recognizing recurring patterns in how power can be gained and maintained. The Night of the Long Knives serves as a stark reminder of how quickly political systems can shift when opposition is silenced and authority becomes unchecked.

In modern contexts, the challenge is to remain vigilant—examining rhetoric, questioning narratives, and ensuring that democratic institutions remain strong. By studying history carefully and thoughtfully, we gain not only perspective but also responsibility: to recognize early warning signs without collapsing distinct realities into false equivalence.

Closing Reflection

I believe we are living in these times once again—very dangerous and very dark times. We must remain aware of what has happened before and how patterns of harm can return throughout history.

The hallmarks of good and true leadership are diplomacy, compassion, grace, dignity, and care for all people—not only within our own country, but throughout the world.

Yet we are witnessing deep divisions: hostility toward immigrants, toward LGBTQ+ people—especially transgender individuals—toward political opponents, scientists, and those who advocate for compassion, justice, and fairness. We see the denigration of entire groups, rhetoric that tells people to “go back” to where they came from, and language that dehumanizes others based on identity or belief.

History has shown us the consequences of such thinking. Ideologies built on supremacy, exclusion, and fear—whether framed as racial, national, or cultural—have never led to lasting peace or justice. They have led to suffering.

We are at a crossroads. Many have been influenced by fear, division, and anger—but we are not without choice. This moment calls for awareness, truth, and healing.

We must move forward—not in blindness, but in clarity. Not in hatred, but in compassion. Not in division, but in unity.

We must heal.

Prayer for Healing Humanity, Leadership, and the World

Divine Creator, Source of all life, God of love and truth,

We come before You with open hearts, seeking healing for our world, our nations, and our souls.

We ask for the healing of history—the wounds of war, oppression, greed, and division that have repeated across generations. Break these cycles now, O God. Let the patterns of harm that have echoed through time come to an end in this moment.

Heal our governments. Heal our political systems. Restore integrity, truth, and compassion where there has been deception, power-seeking, and control. Guide leaders to act not from fear or dominance, but from wisdom, humility, and love.

We ask for healing of the systems that have allowed the wealthy and powerful to profit from suffering—during times of war, crisis, and economic collapse. Transform greed into generosity. Transform exploitation into justice. Let all resources be used for the good of all people.

Heal our world economy. Bring balance and fairness. Let every person have access to what they need:

  • Healthcare

  • Clean air

  • Clean water

  • Safe and affordable housing

  • Education

  • Opportunity

  • Dignity

Protect us, O God, from the adversary—from forces of deception, hatred, division, and harm. Remind us that we belong to You, that we are children of light, and that no darkness can overcome Your truth.

Open our eyes. Remove the veil of deception. Help us see clearly what is good, what is harmful, and what must change. Give us the courage to stand in truth and the wisdom to act with love.

Unite people of all faiths, all backgrounds, all nations. Let us come together in Your name—not in fear, but in love—to resist oppression, to uplift one another, and to create a world rooted in justice and compassion.

We ask for divine intervention: Remove leaders who act in harm, in cruelty, in deception. And raise up leaders who embody love, empathy, integrity, and true spiritual principles.

Let love be known as the highest power—not as a theory, but as a living force that protects, heals, and transforms.

God, save us from the cycles of destruction that have appeared again and again throughout history. Save us from the forces that bring death, division, and suffering.

Restore us. Guide us. Protect us.

We trust in Your power. We trust in Your love. We trust in the light that lives within us all.

And so it is.

Amen.

🧘‍♀️ Guided Meditation: Healing the World and Breaking the Cycle

(5–10 minutes)

Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in… and slowly release.

Feel your body grounded. Feel yourself safe in this moment.

Now imagine a radiant light above you—pure, golden, divine light.

This light is love. This light is truth. This light is God.

Allow this light to gently enter through the top of your head…flowing down through your body…

Filling your mind—clearing confusion and fear. Filling your heart—softening pain and division. Filling your entire being with peace.

Now see this light expanding outward from you…

Into your home…Into your city…Across your country…

And now across the entire world.

See this light touching leaders, governments, institutions.

Where there is greed—light brings awareness. Where there is deception—light reveals truth. Where there is hatred—light awakens compassion.

Now imagine all people, across all nations, standing together in this light.

Different backgrounds… different beliefs…but united in love.

See systems shifting…

  • Fairness replacing inequality

  • Healing replacing harm

  • Peace replacing conflict

Now silently affirm:

“The cycle ends now.” Love leads now.” Truth rises now.”

Take a deep breath in…

Feel gratitude.

Slowly return to your body.

When you’re ready, open your eyes.
