In the Universal Rainbow Faith (URF), we recognize and venerate 12 sacred patrons—transgender men, women, and historical figures who have paved the way for authenticity, justice, and liberation. These saints serve as spiritual guides, protectors, and symbols of divine resilience.

1. Saint Marsha P. Johnson (Patron of Activism & LGBTQ+ Justice)
📌 Who They Were: A Black transgender woman and Stonewall Riots leader, Marsha P. Johnson dedicated her life to LGBTQ+ liberation, trans advocacy, and supporting unhoused queer youth.
🛐 Spiritual Guidance: Strength in activism, courage in adversity, and the power to fight against injustice.

2. Saint Sylvia Rivera (Patron of Transgender Rights & Shelter for the Marginalized)
📌 Who They Were: Co-founder of the Gay Liberation Front and STAR, Sylvia Rivera fought for trans inclusion in the LGBTQ+ movement and advocated for homeless trans youth.

3. Saint Brandon Teena (Patron of Transgender Men & Truth in Identity)
📌 Who They Were: A young transgender man murdered in 1993, his story was later told in Boys Don’t Cry. His tragic death became a rallying call for trans justice.

4. Saint Gwen Araujo (Patron of Trans Youth & the Right to Be Seen)

5. Saint Leelah Alcorn (Patron of Trans Awareness & Ending Conversion Therapy)

6. Saint Lucy Hicks Anderson (Patron of Trans Marriage & Authentic Living)

7. Saint We’wha (Patron of Two-Spirit People & Indigenous Wisdom)
📌 Who They Were: A Two-Spirit leader of the Zuni tribe in the 1800s, We’wha was a respected spiritual figure, diplomat, and artisan.

8. Saint Hatshepsut (Patron of Transgender Royalty & Gender Defiance)
📌 Who They Were: An Egyptian pharaoh (1479 BCE) who ruled as a male king despite being assigned female at birth, challenging traditional gender norms.

9. Saint Elagabalus (Patron of Non-Binary People & Gender Fluidity)
📌 Who They Were: A Roman emperor (218–222 CE) who lived openly as a non-binary and transgender figure, wearing feminine attire and requesting to be addressed as a woman.

10. Saint Lou Sullivan (Patron of Trans History & Documenting Our Stories)

This ceremony is dedicated to honoring the Twelve Sacred Patrons of the Universal Rainbow Faith (URF). Each of these figures represents resilience, courage, and the sacred journey of self-discovery. Through prayer, reflection, and remembrance, we invoke their spirits to guide and protect us.

Marsha P. Johnson was a Black transgender woman, drag queen, and outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. She played a key role in the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, which marked a turning point in the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Marsha co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) with Sylvia Rivera to support homeless queer and trans youth. Known for her radiant smile, floral crowns, and unshakable courage, Marsha became a beloved figure of resistance and joy in the queer community. Her legacy lives on as a powerful symbol of radical love and fearless defiance.

We’wha was a Zuni Two-Spirit individual honored in their community as a spiritual leader, artisan, and cultural ambassador. They blended traditionally male and female roles and were deeply respected for their wisdom and ceremonial knowledge. We’wha even traveled to Washington, D.C., representing the Zuni people to President Grover Cleveland. Their life challenges Western gender binaries and reminds us of the sacred roles that gender-diverse individuals have held in Indigenous cultures throughout history.

Elagabalus challenged imperial tradition, introduced Eastern spiritual practices, and lived openly outside binary gender roles. They remain a symbol of divine fluidity and fearless authenticity.

Xulhaz Mannan was a Bangladeshi activist, writer, and co-founder of "Roopbaan," the country’s first and only LGBTQ+ magazine. Xulhaz's bravery, creativity, and love for his community live on as a beacon for freedom of expression and safety for LGBTQ+ voices worldwide.

Sophie’s story represents all who are targeted for their alternative style, beliefs, or identities. Her spirit calls us to honor diversity, protect the misunderstood, and stand boldly in our truth.

In recognition of his unwavering courage, visionary leadership, and holy defiance in the face of injustice, Harvey Milk is hereby canonized as a Divine Guardian Saint within Universal Rainbow Faith.
As one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States, Harvey Milk dedicated his life to affirming that visibility is sacred, community is divine, and political change is spiritual transformation. He inspired a generation to come out, speak out, and stand up.
His assassination in 1978 made him a queer martyr — a soul whose voice still echoes in every act of courage by LGBTQ+ people across the globe.
